ENG 260 syllabus > my expectations

Here are my expectations of every student in this course:

  • log in frequently Since this is an entirely online and mostly asynchronous course, it's naturally very important that you still "come to class" here in eLearning to check on the course of the latest discussions and to get general course updates. I don't expect you to log in every single day as I, Mr. Dedication, will be doing (even weekends and holidays), but you should be logging in here a bunch of times during the week.
  • purchase ALL of the required textbooks You don't have to tell me how expensive textbooks are these days, but since this is a literature course it's particularly important that you have in your possession your own copies of all the readings. After all, if you rely on a buddy in a course to share his/her texts with you, what happens if that buddy can't share his/her books with you during an exam?
  • complete ALL of the assigned readings
  • pace yourself but keep up with the schedule The nature of this course is that it's largely self-paced, but because of the particularities of teaching in this environment, I need to have you all complete each group of readings and post responses to the Discussions board during the times allotted for each period readings. For this reason, pay close attention to the assignments posted in the Calendar.
  • take the discussions seriously, and read ALL the posts there I've already stated in the "Discussions" subsection of this syllabus how important what will go in the Discussions tool will be to this course. It won't be enough just to add empty content to these forums; I will expect all of you to have done the readings and bring some knowledge and understanding of them to the discussions. My goal is not necessarily to have you speak like experts at a professional conference but to have some interesting and thought-provoking discussion from which we all might learn something.
  • In particular, please avoid what I call "drive-by posting," i.e., where after you log in you just go right to the current week's discussion and just make your one required post for the period and then leave right after that, without checking on anything that's been posted since you last logged in. One way I can tell you might be doing this is if I see something I rail against in the "Discussions" subsection of this syllabus, and as I say there the best way to avoid pissing me off like this is to make frequent use of the Reply button when you're reading other people's postings.
  • do your own work or suffer the consequences
  • always ask for help if you need it You can get help with any technical difficulties involving eLearning through this form. For other specific course-related or personal issues, you can use the Mail tool under Course Tools to contact me directly (and indeed I'd rather have you do this than post such questions to the discussions forums; remember what I intend the Discussions tool be used for exclusively), but be advised that I'll always reply to Mail messages through the regular Cortland e-mail/WebMail sytem to whatever e-mail address you've used to contact me before, or if you haven't to whatever e-mail address is given for you on our class list in myRedDragon, so please make sure the address that's listed for you there is one that you still use and check. Speaking of e-mail . . .
  • retrieve and read any personal e-mail messages you may receive from me, and respond to them and/or follow their directions as may be appropriate or required

Stated simply, we both have a job to do: you to pass this course and I to help you do it. Let’s work together so we can accomplish this with as few problems as possible for all of us.

Lastly, if you are a student with a disability, I will be perfectly willing to do what I can to help you succeed in the course. Please refer to the next section of this syllabus, "students with disabilities."
