Below is how this course is described in the SUNY Cortland 2009-2010 Undergraduate Catalog: Philosophical, psychological, sociological ideas and problems associated with growing emphasis on sport in modern life. Fulfills: GE 7; LASR. Notes: Successful completion of CPN 100 or CPN 102 is prerequisite to all courses in English. CPN 101 or CPN 103 may be taken concurrently with any 200-level literature course. For English and adolescence education majors, ENG 203 is prerequisite for 300-level literature courses. (3 cr. hr.) This course is classified as meeting the requirements of Category 7., (The) Humanities, of SUNY Cortland's General Education 2007, which is an integration of the Cortland General Education Program and the State University of New York's General Education requirements. Courses in the Category 7. are meant to "help students appreciate and understand the humanities” and "will address a humanities discipline through a variety of resources and critical approaches" (SUNY Cortland 2009-2010 Undergraduate Catalog). To conform with the previously stated objectives and purposes, this course will therefore be a survey of imaginative literature (i.e., fiction, drama and poetry) whose main topic is athletics, by which I mean team or individual competitive sports. In addition, this course is Writing Intensive (WI) and (the standards of the WI designation are to be met through your postings to the Discussions board and your essay exams (see the "main parts of the course" section of this syllabus).
